地球磁场是指地球内部存在的天然磁性现象。地球可视为一个磁偶极,其中一极位在地理北极附近,另一极位在地理南极附近。通过这两个磁极的假想直线(磁轴)与地球的自转轴大约成11.3度的倾斜。地球的磁场向太空伸出数万公里形成地球磁圈引力。地球磁圈对地球而言有屏障太阳风所挟带的带电粒子的作用。地球磁圈在白昼区(向日面)受到带电粒子的力影响而被挤压,在地球黑夜区(背日面)则向外伸出。

地球磁场属于电磁场,是通过外核的电子随地球自转的电流效应(近似于电生磁)产生的磁场。

地球磁层位于地面600--1000公里高处,磁层的外边界叫磁层顶,离地面5--7万公里。在太阳风的压缩下,地球磁力线向背着太阳一面的空间延伸得很远,形成一条长长的尾巴,称为磁尾。在磁赤道附近,有一个特殊的界面,在界面两边,磁力线突然改变方向,此界面称为中性片。中性片上的磁场强度微乎其微,厚度大约有1000公里。中性片将磁尾部分成两部分:北面的磁力线向着地球,南面的磁力线离开地球。

磁力线分布特点是:赤道附近磁场的方向是水平的,两极附近则与地表垂直。赤道处磁场最弱,两极最强。地球表面的磁场受到各种因素的影响而随时间发生变化。

地球磁场由基本磁场、外源磁场和磁异常三部分组成。

基本磁场也叫正常场。占地球磁场的99%以上。基本磁场主要由地核内电流的对流形成.它是一种内源磁场。

外源磁场是起源于地球外部并叠加在基本磁场上的各种短期磁变化。主要有:与太阳黑子活动周期一致的磁变化;日变化,日变化与太阳辐射对高空电离层的影响有关;磁暴。

磁异常是地下岩矿石或地质构造受地球磁场磁化后,在其周围空间形成并叠加在地球磁场上的次生磁场。

地球磁场最大的作用是形成一道屏障,把宇宙射线集中到地球的南北两个磁极。地球受到太阳的影响非常大,太阳风在离地球大约公里以外,也就是10倍于地球半径的地方,以每秒数百公里的速度飞向地球。

太阳风不断冲击着地球外围环境,当粒子流进入地球附近时,一部分会由于受洛仑兹力作用绕过地球,剩下的会被类似磁镜的地磁系统俘获,通常在5至10个地球半径外的距离就被拦截到。

太阳风与地磁场相持形成的曲面是磁层的边界,称为磁层顶。磁层的形成,使地球磁场拦截了太阳辐射来的带电粒子,以及对生命体一般具有危害的宇宙射线,使它们难以到达地面,而是留在高层大气之外,环绕地球流动。这种屏蔽作用对生物的生存与繁衍具有重要意义。

地球的极光是来自地球磁层或太阳的高能带电粒子流(太阳风)使高层大气分子或原子激发(或电离)而产生的。
